This promotional movie introduces traditional event called Ashiya’s Hassaku Festival which has a history of 300 years. Hassaku refers to August 1st based on the old lunar calendar and the event is currently held on September 1st and 2nd. At the houses of children experiencing their Hassaku the child’s growth is prayed for.
Various items are made and distributed around the neighborhood to pray the child’s growth.
Access to Ashiya-machi town
Arrived by airplane:
Approximately 2hrs from Haneda Airport to Fukuoka Airport. About an hour drive from Fukuoka Airport to the center of Ashiya-machi town.
Arriving by train:
Appoximately 5 hrs from Tokyo station to Hakata station by bullet train. About 50 mins from Hakata Station to Ongagawa Station by JR Kagoshima Main Line.
Ashiya, a town with a beautiful coast line
The best scenic place in Ashiya-machi is Dozan which is a name of two islands. Interesting shaped rocks on the sea make a beautiful scenery. Another popular must-see spot is Kario Misaki with stone pavement called Senmaijiki which was made by erosion .
If you would like to see beautiful coast line of Ashiya, Hamayu Sightseeing Road is recommended. Hamayu (crinum) and Senmaijiki can be seen from the road.
There are many historical places in Ashiya as well. Okanominato Shrine which appeared in Nihonshoki has 400 year-old Japanese sago palm called Senkouin Sotetsu which is a prefectural natural monument. It is one of Japan’s three great Japanese sago palms and is said that soldiers of the domain Kuroda brought it from Shimabara Rebellion. Jinmutennosha which appeared in Kojiki is famous place where emperor Jinmu stayed for a year.
Ashiya-gama no sato
Ashiya’s traditional handcraft “Ashiya-gama” tea pot is must-see thing. It’s been made since 14th century and 8 of 9 tea pots of national important cultural assets are Ashiya-gama.
Fresh seafood at fishing town, Ashiya
The remarkable specialty is squid called “Ashiyan-ika”. Ashiya has one of the leading squid catch in western Japan. The squid should be eaten as Sashimi. Ashiya is great place to taste fresh seafood. Dried sardines marinated with Mirin called “Ashiya-mirin” is popular. Ashiya-gama monaka is popular souvenir which has two different flavor of red bean paste and Matcha.
