Access to Okawa City

Arriving by airplane:
Approximately 2hrs from Haneda Airport to Fukuoka Airport. About 1 hr drive from Fukuoka Airport to the center of Okawa City.

Arriving by train:
Approximately 5 hrs from Tokyo station to Hakata station by bullet train. About 30 mins from Hakata Station to Hainuzuka Station by JR Kagoshima Main Line. Another 30 min bus ride from Hainuzuka Station to the center of Okawa City.

Technique of woodwork in “Interior city” Okawa

Okawa which is located in the mouth of Chikugo River used to be a timber yard from Hita which was timber producing area at headstream of Chikugo River. It is said that Kumenosuke Enokizu started woodwork by using shipwright techniques in Muromachi Period. The base of Okawa woodwork was made in Edo Period, and division of the techniques were developed and 1/4 of residents worked for the woodwork industry in Meiji Period. The statue of Kumenosuke Enokizu at Ganren-ji Temple is a symbol of the city.

The top techniques of Okawa woodwork can be seen at Old Yoshiwara Residence which is national important cultural property. It is an art with detailed structure. Also Kobo Enokizu area is a must-see place which still remains an old townscape of Edo Period.

Okawa City has so many great ingredients such as very rare Etsu fish, River angler, natural eels, Amaou strawberries and more.

Also Okawa City is known as a great producer of rice, sake and vinegar made with clear water from Chikugo River. There are two Sake brewers and they brew sake with traditional way of brewing. Other than sake, they make fruit liqueur which is popular for souvenirs.
