Ishibashi Culture Center Tsubaki-en has 260 kinds of camellia. Ishibashi Culture Center Tsubaki-en has 4 different zones such as scent of camellia zone, camellia from Kurume zone, Japanese camellia zone and camellia from the world zone. “Hotomeki” means entertaining guests in the dialect of Kurume City. Many tourists both from inside and outside the prefecture visit Kurume City where has the largest river Chikugo River and Minou mountains. The city is a perfect place to visit because of various sightseeing spots like temples, shrines, museums and more. You will feel the spirit of “Hotomeki” everywhere you go.


If you are a fan of art, Kurume Museum is the must-go place where was made by a founder of Bridgestone Mr. Ishibashi. Paintings of Kyushu Region and Kurume are mainly displayed.

Naritasan Kurume Temple which is a branch temple of Naritasan Shinsho Temple is a popular place for visitors because of the huge Kusejibodai Kannon statue. The statue is 62 meters high and the largest Kannon statue in Japan. The temple is like a theme park with main worship hall, history hall and Indian village Heiwa Daibutsu tower. Also, Suitengu Shrine and Kora Taisha Shrine are must-see places.


Proud of unique local tastes and rich ingredients

Not well known but Kurume City is a town of Yakitori. One of Yatai (food stand) started serving Yakitori in 1963 and about 10 Yatais followed. Currently, there are over 200 Yakitori places in the city. Yakitori should be made with chicken but pork was mainly served at that time. Skewers with vegetable such as enoki mushrooms, asparagus, shiso leaves and more wrapped with sliced pork are popular too. Also, there are many good yakiniku places in the city as well.

Kurume City is blessed with natural ingredients. Since fresh seafood is caught from Genkai Nada Sea, Sushi is highly recommended. Kurume City is known as a place where Etsu which is very rare fish can be eaten.

Tonkotsu ramen is eaten everywhere in Kyushu Region. It is said that Kurume is a birthplace of Tonkotsu ramen. Not only ramen but also Udon noodles are good too.
