[:en]It takes about 25 mins from Kono-Minato Port to Oshima, the largest island in Fukuoka Prefecture. Oshima is 16km circumference and the population is 800 people. It’s such a beautiful island that is becoming a popular sightseeing spot. There are many must-see places such as Munakata-taisha Shrine Nakatsumiya which was introduced in this promotional movie, observatory and more.

Access to Munakata City

Arriving by airplane:
Approximately 2hrs from Haneda Airport to Fukuoka Airport. About 1 hr from Fukuoka Airport to the center of Munakata City.

Arriving by train:
Approximately 5 hrs from Tokyo station to Hakata station by bullet train. Another 30 mins from Hakata Station to Togo Station by JR Kagoshima Main Line.

Munakata-taisha Shrine which was introduced in the promotional movie has not only Nakatsumiya shrine in Oshima but also 2 more shrines. Each shrine is enshrined 3 different goddesses. There is Shinpo-kan Museum that exhibits 80000 of unearthed artifacts from Okinoshima ritual sites in Hetsumiya shrine which is the most popular shrine, and all of the artifacts are national treasure.

Okitsumiya shrine

There is another shrine called Okitsumiya shrine where is located in Okinoshima Island which is 49 km away from Oshima. Okitsumiya shrine is sacred island and is no trespassing except priests and women forbidden. Okinoshima Island is famous for World Heritage candidates.

Chinkoku Temple is a temple related to Munakata-Taisha Shrine, is a popular sightseeing spot as a place thought to be flowing with mystical energy. The temple is said that was established by Kukai ( a founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism). The temple features statue of Fudo Myo-O caved by Kukai and is a national important property which is shown only on 28th of April every year.

Many unique local dishes in Munakata

Munakata City has many traditional local dishes. Okyu is a must dish with breakfast which is curd of seaweed marinated with sesame seeds, soy sauce and vinegar. It’s also known as local dish of Hakata but its in Munakata is different. Usually it’s filtered before making curd but Munakata style is not filtered.

Tsubaki (camellia) oil rice is another feast of Munakata which tastes like Chicken rice in Fukuoka. The rice cooked with locally produced camellia oil has rich aroma and tasty. Also Chicken Sukiyaki, dried fish called Nosaba and more have been loved by locals.
