Access to Dazaifu City

Arriving by airplane:
Approximately 2hrs from Haneda Airport to Fukuoka Airport. About a 25 min drive from Fukuoka Airport to Dazaifu City.

Arriving by train:
Approximately 5 hrs from Tokyo station to Hakata station by bullet train. About 11 mins from the airport to Tenjin Station by Fukuoka City Subway. Another 20 mins from Nishitetsu-Tenjin Station to Nishitetsu-Futsukaichi Station and 5 mins from Nishitetsu-Futsukaichi Station to Dazaifu Station by Nishitetsu-Tenjin-Omuta Line.

Daizaifu Tenmangu Shrine is enshrined Sugawara no Michizane and 7,000,000 people visit for worship from all over the world and Japan every year. When you go through the Torii, the front guard frame, from the approach to the shrine, huge beautiful precincts looks like a traditional Japanese garden can be seen. It’s worth to see only the scenery of big pond with an arched bridge and beautiful trees.

In February, 6000 of plum trees bloom that makes the scenery more fantastic. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, has a long history, has not only cultural properties inside the building but also in the precincts. It is said that the shrine was built in A.D. 919 and many buildings were built so far and some of them are registered as national important cultural properties. It is also said that Kuroda Kanbe who is known as a tactician for Toyotomi Hideyoshi stayed in the precincts.

There are many must-see spots just in the precincts of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine but the approach is also the must-see place. Currently, the approach is always lively with many visitors but it used to be a place where many historical people walked through in the history. It is said that many leading spirits of the Restoration stayed at Matsuya which is located on the approach in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate.

There is Kyushu National Museum at the back of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine which is another popular place to visit has a million visitors every year. It is the largest national museum in Japan.

Not only Umegae-mochi, local food of Dazaifu

The specialty Sugawara no Michizane related Umegae-mochi is absolutely a must-eat food. There are many Umegae-mochi stores on the approach. Umegae-mochi is baked moch filled red bean paste in it. There is a Mentaiko (seasoned cod roe) store which invented Mentaiko first in Japan. You should try and find the difference of many Mentaiko. Also, Dazaifu burger is getting popular as a new local taste. Walking on the approach is the best way to enjoy many different local food.
